The shortage of game officials has reached a critical point in our state. TSSAA has nearly 300

fewer registered officials than it had in the previous school year. The total pool of registered

officials is down as much as 13% in some sports. In some instances, TSSAA local officials

associations have not been able to cover JV contests due to the lack of available officials.

Varsity schedules have also been affected.

The TSSAA Board of Control recently charged the TSSAA staff to form a committee to study

this issue and make recommendations on how potential officials can be recruited and

retained. The TSSAA Officials Recruitment Committee held its first meeting on April 20.

Officials from across the state spent the day discussing strategies for recruitment, training,

and retention of officials. One of the common themes that emerged from the day of

discussion is that nearly all people began because a friend or former coach asked them to

become involved in officiating high school athletics. The local officials associations in your

area are committed to doing just that asking individuals to give it a try and give back to the

game.

We need your help in identifying qualified individuals that could be potential sports officials.

Specifically, we are asking that each school list at least the name and contact information

(phone number and email address) of at least one potential official for each sport that your

school offers. Graduating seniors, parents, teachers, administrators, and fans in the

community are probably the most likely candidates to replenish the shrinking pools of

officials.

If your school fulfills the requirement of providing a name for each sport, your school will

receive three additional TSSAA Identification Cards and one additional TSSAA Championship

Event Card at the 2016 TSSAA Administrators Meetings.

Officiating provides an opportunity to make extra money, stay in shape, enjoy the sports

that you love, and last, but certainly not least, make friends that can last a lifetime. We hope

that you will consider helping us identify those who are ready to "stay in the game!"
